Kids tips for Cybersurfing
Surfing the internet can sometimes feel like wandering around an unknown city without a map.
Links from good sites are a good place to start. In Cybersmart Kids Online you'll find:
- Cool sites for kids and handy homework sites
- Cybersmart youth sites and study online
The internet is vast and there are many great sites. When looking for information online be clear on what you are looking for and plan your searches. It's a good idea to try multiple sources:
SEARCH: for specific facts. Search engines are able to sort large amounts of information quickly but they rely on you to formulate specific search criteria. Use the HELP links in each search engine to learn how to narrow your search. It is often better to search with a phrase rather than individual words.
DIRECTORIES: For general background, information directories are usually better. Most search engines have directories on their search pages. See: Altavista, Lycos, Yahoo, Google and Web Wombat.
WHITE PAGES: If you're looking for a person, organisation or company in Australia, try Telstra's whitepages.com.au
GUESS AND TEST: If you try and guess the address (url) for Australian domains, remember the common endings are:
| .com.au | (primarily for businesses) |
|---|---|
| .net.au | (technology related or internet service providers) |
| .org.au | (community organisations) |
| .gov.au | (government agencies) |
| .edu.au | (educational institutions) |
OTHER USEFUL SITES: Try newspaper web sites (eg www.news.com.au), Government web sites (for example, www.nsw.gov.au or www.vicnet.net.au) and library sites (eg www.nla.gov.au).
REMEMBER: Take a note of domain names that might be of interest. Keep track of what you have already found and store links using Bookmarks (for Netscape) or Favourites (for Microsoft Internet Explorer) and set up a series of folders to organise these stored links.
Remember to always be cybersmart. Protect your privacy.
